Here’s a quick story from a job we handled this week.
We were called out by a family who is in the process of buying a recently remodeled home here in the Valley. From the outside, everything looked fantastic.
The home had:
Fresh finishes
New fixtures
Clean landscaping
A modern remodel throughout
To the average buyer, and even during a standard home inspection, it appeared move-in ready.
But the buyers wanted to take an extra step and schedule a sewer camera inspection before closing.
That decision turned out to be very important.
When we arrived, the first thing we noticed was something unusual: we couldn’t find the sewer cleanouts around the house.
Cleanouts are access points plumbers use to inspect and service the sewer line. Normally, they’re visible somewhere in the yard or near the home’s exterior.

During the remodeling process, plaster and other materials had been poured down the drain, where they hardened inside the pipe like concrete.
Instead of washing away, the material had settled and solidified, creating a rock-hard blockage that completely stopped the line.
In other words, the sewer system was essentially cemented shut.
Unfortunately, this situation isn’t as rare as you might think.
During renovations, workers sometimes rinse tools, buckets, or construction materials in sinks or drains without realizing the damage it can cause.
Common remodeling debris that ends up in pipes includes:

These materials are not designed to go through plumbing systems. Once they harden, they can block pipes and require major cleaning or repair.

You can see new countertops, fresh paint, and new flooring, but you can’t see what’s happening underground.
